Dear Django: Those python functions you call ‘views’ are in reality ‘controllers’ mmkay? Please read [[Model-view-controller]] and change it, ok? Sincerely, Silas Snider

Church
So, I found a church that a) is reformed, b) has people my age, and c) is close to my apartment. I went there yesterday, and the service was pretty good. They’ve done the over-produced worship music thing, but otherwise it was awesome, especially the sermon (which was on Acts 8:4-40) Church: City Reformed Pictures: Here and here Oh, and they meet in the Frick Internation Studies Academy....

A Rant
So, I’ve started encountering a certain type of computer science student more often. Specifically, they know of technologies that could help them do the things they are trying to do, but they allow inertia to stop them from actually using them. Yes, in case you have not guessed, I am talking about Version Control here. It was shocking just how prevalent this was among last term’s game...

Tumblr Features
Two features I would kill for: I should be able to get an RSS feed (Pro tip: use ‘an’ if the next sound is a vowel, regardless of spelling. R is pronounced arrrgh (i.e. like a pirate) by most english speakers) of my Dashboard — I’ve got a feed reader for a reason. Now, I know that Tumblelogs from Tumblr all have their own RSS feed, but it would be nice to cut down on the...

'Sparse' Document Collections
I was having a conversation with some friends recently about the means of handling digital document collections that contain hundreds of thousands of documents, but where only a tiny fraction (let’s say < 30) are actually heavily referenced. Furthermore, let’s suppose that this collection has been built by OCRing many disparate sources, which causes subtle errors that are...

Pittsburgh
As some of you know, I’ve just moved to Pittsburgh in order to work on Sonya Labs, and have just finished setting up my computer at the apartment. I’ve posted some pictures to flickr in the usual place. More to come soon!

Username does not exist
Could not have said this better: elliotbay: I’m not a security expert by any means, but I do know a little about it, so I often have a good idea of what makes a system more secure and what falsely makes you feel more secure.  I heard a statement recently about security that I’m going to rail against for a bit, because I think it needs to be said, and because I’m annoyed by interfaces that have...

Knowledge
I’ve recently come to the realization that I possess certain pieces of knowledge that are not written down anywhere — either I’ve recieved it through geek oral tradition, or I’ve discovered it for myself somewhere along the way. Due to the fact that an eager young padawan has yet to show up, I’ve decided to start keeping a journal of such discoveries so that there is...
