Announcing Catalog!
Last Saturday night, I was talking to Mike, a (pgh) friend of mine, and he mentioned the arduous process he goes through in order to catalog his DVDs and keep track of who he’s lent them to.
Announcing Catalog!, a Google AppEngine based product that expedites this process. Right now, you can add DVDs by UPC lookup (thanks to Amazon.com), and lend and return DVDs by UPC.
Setting up an account is a snap — Catalog! uses your existing Google credentials, which means I didn’t have to write a authentication layer.
Going forward, I’m writing an Android app that will allow you to scan a UPC and either add it to your collection, or mark it as lent or returned (Mike has a gPhone, so he asked for this feature). In addition, you will soon be able to keep track of more than just movies — “anything with an entry in Amazon” is the goal, although I’ll start with books and cds.
I’ve also created a webservice API, which should be obvious from the code, although it will eventually have explicit documentation.
Post any questions in the comments, and I’ll respond to them ASAP.
EDIT: Release Notes are one their way.
